The most interesting furniture does not always ask us to sit, eat, or work differently. Sometimes, it asks us to rethink what furniture can be in the first place. Across contemporary and experimental design, transformable objects are challenging the idea that a chair must remain a chair or a table must occupy the same footprint all day. By using clever mechanisms, traditional craft, and surprisingly simple materials, designers are creating furniture that changes its shape, function, and relationship with space.

American designer Ian Stell’s Austrian Loop Chair begins with a deceptively simple idea: what if a bench could become two chairs? The result is an extraordinary piece of kinetic furniture that expands and contracts like a concertina. When extended, it can reach approximately seven feet, allowing multiple people to sit apart. Contract it, and the same structure brings its occupants closer together, eventually forming two conjoined chairs.

The construction is as impressive as the transformation. The limited-edition piece, produced in an edition of just five, uses around 800 pieces of maple wood connected by 200 brass pivots. Longitudinal wooden sections create the seat, while shorter elements positioned at right angles become the legs, arms, and angled backrests. As the structure moves, the geometry of the chair changes with it, meaning that even the backrest appears to participate in the choreography.

Stell drew inspiration from the traditional tête-à-tête, or conversation chair, a type of seating that emerged in France during the 18th and 19th centuries. Those chairs were designed to encourage intimate conversation between two people, but their arrangement was permanently fixed. Stell takes that social idea and makes it dynamic. Instead of deciding in advance how close two people should sit, the chair allows its users to make that decision themselves.

The mechanism has roots in another ingenious object: the pantograph, a hinged parallelogram mechanism historically used to copy and scale drawings. Stell has previously explored similar mechanisms in tables and stools, but the Austrian Loop Chair introduces a diagonal backrest and a new sense of movement. The piece was assembled in his Red Hook, New York studio using miniature versions of techniques associated with beading, basket weaving, and bridge building. The result is furniture that does more than perform a function. It performs.

Rope Stool by Esbjorn Grip and Junsei Fujimoto

If the Austrian Loop Chair celebrates mechanical complexity, the Rope Stool takes almost the opposite approach. Created by designers Esbjorn Grip and Junsei Fujimoto during a craft exchange between Tottori, Japan, and Gothenburg, Sweden, the stool asks a wonderfully direct question: how much furniture can you make if you remove nearly everything that normally holds it together?

The answer is a remarkably simple folding seat made from flat Japanese cedar boards and rope. There are no screws, bolts, dowels, or adhesives. Instead, tension does the structural work. Identical wooden elements are pulled into position by the rope, creating a rigid stool when assembled and a compact bundle of boards when released. It is an unusually transparent construction method because the mechanism is not hidden inside the object. The mechanism is the object.

That simplicity emerged from an intentionally restrictive brief. The designers were asked to create furniture using a single, repeatable wooden element. Every board therefore follows the same basic format, eliminating the need for complicated custom components. Japanese cedar, or sugi, is particularly suited to the idea because it is lightweight, straight-grained, and traditionally important in Japanese woodworking. The result is a piece that feels less manufactured than assembled, almost as though the user completes the design simply by tightening the rope.

Its ability to pack flat also gives the concept practical relevance. Rather than being another clever prototype destined to sit permanently in a gallery, the Rope Stool imagines furniture as something mobile. It can be transported to a workshop, market, outdoor event, or temporary space, then folded away when the occasion ends.

Long before transformable furniture became a popular answer to compact living, Swedish freelance designers Sigrid Strömgren and Sanna Lindström were exploring how dramatic movement could give an everyday object an entirely new identity. Their Grand Central table transforms from a relatively compact occasional table into a much larger centerpiece. It is furniture designed to save space when necessary and command attention when there is room to make an entrance.

The tabletop is divided into multiple sections that fold outward through an ingenious construction. In its compact form, the table has a modest footprint, measuring approximately 790 millimetres in diameter. As it opens, however, the sections fan outward to create a considerably more expansive surface. The transformation is both functional and theatrical, turning what might otherwise be an ordinary piece of furniture into a small architectural event.

The inspiration comes from an unexpectedly familiar object: a pop-up map of New York. That reference explains much of Grand Central’s character. Like a map unfolding from a compact package into a larger landscape, the table changes its spatial presence through a carefully choreographed sequence of movements. Its lacquered plywood and MDF construction reinforces the contrast between the simple materials and the spectacular geometry they can produce.

Innovation in furniture does not necessarily require exotic materials, electronics, or futuristic technology. Sometimes it comes from looking closely at something old, such as a pantograph, a traditional craft technique, a length of rope, or a folding map, and asking what else it could do.
