In classical architecture, the term ‘arcade’ refers to a series of arches supported by columns or other vertical elements such as piers. First developed by the Romans, who took inspiration from ancient aqueduct designs, arcades today are used to form a passageway between arches and a solid wall, or a covered walkway providing access to commercial buildings or markets.
Summer is in its full swing, so we selected an array of beautifully designed bespoke parasols that go beyond sunshading – those will be suitable for those who would like to get some tan or fully block the direct sunlight.
In the digital era, books are not opened that often. Nevertheless, bookshelves remain an important piece of furniture in most homes and offices. Orthopedic cast immobilisation is one of the most common ways of treating broken and fractured bones, involving the use of materials to encase and restrict the movement of broken bones, which allows them to heal. A standard for decades are plaster fracture casts that are not water resistant and can cause great discomfort, annoying sweat, stink, and itch when being worn for weeks or even months. Product designers do their best to find new sustainable methods to design and manufacture alternative medical casts that are both functional and elegant.
Spiral staircases allow for efficient usage of space and provide an aesthetically attractive design component to the static form of a building. Spiral designs can transform the function of a series of steps so that they become much more than just a means of transitioning between floors.
Nature has often adopted the spiral shape as a very efficient design for growth, strength and survivability. It is no wonder that architects incorporate the graceful, elegant spiral shape as a major design element in architecture.
