Implemented in foldable smartphones, bendable displays have captured the attention of the tech world in the last couple of years, and each year we see new models coming out. If you need some more reasons that would persuade you into getting one before it gets mainstream, we have selected several models with polished looks and bespoke functionality.

Oppo N3 Flip

If you think that once you have seen one foldable phone, you have seen them all, there’s definitely plenty of room for improvement and innovation. Oppo N3 Flip boasts a compact design – when folded it is close to common phoze size, and when unfolded is is more like a standard horizontal tablet. It is also incredibly thin and therefore as light as a regular phone.

The hinge allows the user to hold the device in a different way according to their needs. This is particularly useful when taking selfies with the main camera, or folding the phone halfway for difficult angles, thus eliminating the need for a tripod or a selfie stick.

The top half has a rounded-over glass back, the sides are also polished for mirror shine and the camera module knurls around it. The triple camera array on the rear is one of the noticeable design elements, the first ever to be seen on a clamshell-styled foldable phone.

HONOR V Purse

Another Chinese brand, Honor marries fashion and technology. At IFA 2023 in Berlin, it has presented a new concept that transforms its foldable smartphone into a wearable fashion bag. Conceived as the starting point of turning smartphones into more than their social and connective purposes. the Honor V Purse is equipped with screen displays that never turn off and mimic a handbag design.

These live displays feature design elements such as chains, feathers, and tassels, and whenever the foldable smartphone moves, these on-screen accessories sway and follow the movement of the smartphone too. One of the interactive artworks used – Deep Breath by Shanghai artist Xiao Hui Wang – responds to the user’s breath expanding when the user takes a deep breath.

The design team takes it a step further by offering the user interchangeable straps and chains that clip onto the hinge on the foldable smartphone. In such a way, the smartphone can be worn over the user’s shoulder like a real purse.

Motorola Adaptive Display Concept (also header image)

To raise the bar of what foldables are capable of doing, at Lenovo Tech World 2023 event, Motorola has unveiled an innovative bendable smartphone that can adapt to different usage scenarios, and even wrap around the user’s wrist to function like a bespoke smartwatch. The eye-catching concept features a flexible FHD+ pOLED display with a vivid fabric backing that attaches to a magnetized wrist strap. According to the Lenovo-owned telecommunication company, the new bendable 6.9-inch screen can be “shaped into different forms” based on the end user’s need. The user interface transition is made seamless using the Android OS.
