We all love looking at the moon. For centuries, the moon has been a source of fascination, mystique, and symbolism of romance for poets. It is even believed to influence the way we feel depending on its position in the sky. The magic of the moonlight is a constant inspiration for lighting designers too, as they try to recreate its ambiance and glow indoors.

Moonsetter by Anne Boysen

Danish architect and designer Anne Boysen teamed up with lighting manufacturer Louis Poulsen to create a floor lamp inspired by a ray of moonlight shone through aе gap in the curtains. Designed to serve as a sculpture, when the light is turned off, the design is founded on basic geometric shapes with the circle, square and cylinder.

Named Moonsetter, the lamp features its own axis where a disc rotates 360-degrees allowing the user to customize the reflection of the LED source. The disc features a reflective side and white on the other. Turned towards the white side, the light becomes soft and diffused, whereas the opposite side reflects the light directly, creating a different expression. The LED light is submerged in the frame, giving off a beautiful effect. The user can dim the light using their foot.

Like a piece of art, the sculptural aesthetic of the floor lamp takes centre stage in any interior, where it attracts attention by shaping a space through reflection and light. The disc allows the user to interact with the fixture and decide how the light should be reflected in the room, and how the room should be reflected in the mirror surface of the lamp.

Studio Gingko Design based in Warwickshire, England has created Smart Moon Lamp, a gravity-defying levitating light that creates a fascinating and life-like illusion of the real thing.

A sphere 3D printed from completely safe and biodegradable translucent PLA, with its textured surface imitating that of the moon, slowly rotates in the space above a wooden base: reclaimed dark walnut or light ash wood. Using a powerful built-in magnet, the moon is suspended and floats in mid-air, gently rotating as a planetary object would.

The stunning and functional piece comes with built-in LEDs that give the moon its signature glow, with 3 light temperatures to choose from by gently touching the base – warm white (3500k) and white (5000k), and a special yellow warm (2700k) for the rare blood moon effect.

Moon Light by Wenjie Zheng

Based in Hangzhou, China, product designer Wenjie Zheng has conceptualized a folding desk lamp that effuses a tranquil dual-tone light reminiscent of the moon’s mellow glow to reproduce the feeling and illumination that’s generally associated with moonlight.

Named Moon Light, the delicate design consists of three parts: two long flutes and a toroidal ring. The linear flute functions as the lamp’s primary source of light and can stretch out to a maximum of 145 degrees from the lamp’s center. The lamp’s design prioritizes optical prism lighting, which means that the glass is cut in such a way that naturally reflects and bends light.

The lamp’s ring that represents the lunar satellite is its focal point: when folded, the lamp might evoke images of the moon hanging above a tree. Besides, the ring light offers auxiliary light, which is ideal for younger children to use as a night light. Whoever uses it, the Moon Light lamp will bring them tranquility needed to clear their brain – just as the real moonlight does.
