OLA beach poufs by Flora Koel

Paris-based designer Flora Koel proposes “renting” sand for your day on the beach and giving it back where it is supposed to be when you go home. She has developed a collection of sandbags that are used as beach poufs – filling up with the surrounding sand, they take shape in situ.

Made from upcycled plastic from boats, yacht tarpaulins, and seat belts, the three different seats can be easily transported when empty. The O and the A designs fit comfortably into the L, which is conceived to carry the other two to any suitable location, where they are made full, providing a comfortable surface to sit, or lean on next to the sea.

Interior and industrial designer Hector Galvan of Mexico based studio Omelette has designed a beach chair that uses sand as its integral part.

The 2 kg seat is made from recycled, dehydrated wood covered by epoxy paint and can be stuck into the sand. When used that way, the piece forms a back of the impromptu beach chair, allowing the user to lean on it when chilling on the beach. Thus, the design uses the surrounding context as its part, extending beyond the small portable object.

Bucket set by Klara Zavadilova (via designboom)

The Bucket set by Klara Zavadilova from Czech Republic is derived from the treasured childhood recollections of making sand pies on the beach. Encompassing a lightweight plastic bucket and a lid, it can be used to make sand tables.

After the sand table is ready, the lid is placed on top, with the recess in it serving as a compartment for a bottle of water or a glass that prevents them from sliding off. Meanwhile, the mould acts as a small stool to go with the table, making the set a great choice for a beach outing or a picnic on a sandy location.

To fill the bucket quicker, there is a spade that doubles as a towel hanger when not in use.

Marina Chair by Julia Esque (via dezeen)

Spanish product designer and Swiss design school ECAL graduate Júlia Esqué  has chosen a different approach for her portable Marina beach chair. The piece includes a removable seat that can also serve as a beach towel. In such a way, the conventional user experience that involves drying oneself with a towel after a swim and laying it down on the sand is replaced by a cozier and drier one.

The beach towels are hand-printed with the graphic patterns based on the International maritime signal flags traditionally used by sailors to communicate with passing ships. To create the seat, a towel connects at each corner to a pale ash wood frame made up of two pieces, which are hinged together to allow the structure to be flattened for easy transportation. Both the towel and the position of the chair frame are locked in place by two lengths of rope.
