Pizza is a beloved comfort food, but the experience of enjoying a slice can be transformed by the atmosphere of the pizzeria. Unique interiors—whether bold and eclectic or sleek and modern—create an inviting backdrop that elevates the meal. These spaces not only enhance the visual appeal but also foster a sense of community and creativity. The restaurants featured in this post continue our exploration of pizzerias that blend culinary excellence with extraordinary interiors.
Designed by Jordana Maisie, founder of a multidisciplinary studio based in Los Angeles, Una Pizza Napoletana in NYC’s Lower East Side features unique penny round tiles—both dark and light—that create distinct yet cohesive areas.
Upon entering, guests are greeted by matte-black penny rounds running along the walls and floor, complemented by built-in seating and small wooden tables. This darker side evokes a cozy, intimate vibe.
Conversely, the lighter-toned penny rounds on the other side create an airy feel, highlighted by a bar wrapped in tiles and a range of seating options. A striking partition of perforated metal subtly divides the space, allowing views into the kitchen, where the craftsmanship of pizza-making unfolds.
Materials throughout the pizzeria, like the monochromatic marble bar and custom-designed furniture, blend deco elegance with industrial rawness. This thoughtful design emphasizes the artisanal quality of the cuisine, making every visit to Una Pizza Napoletana an immersive experience.
Continuing our journey through pizzerias with remarkable interiors, let’s dive into Pizzeria Della Madonna in Mexico City. Designed by architect Sofía Betancur, this restaurant draws inspiration from its neighboring church, Parroquia de la Sagrada Familia.
The layout reflects a thoughtful homage to religious architecture, featuring elements like semicircular arches and Corinthian columns. The striking pizza oven takes center stage in the restaurant, positioned directly in view of the glass doors, making it a focal point for diners. Its sculptural form is encased in a halo-like stainless steel frame, providing a functional shelf for freshly baked pizzas.
The interior boasts distressed plaster walls, evoking the charm of an old Italian church, with multiple layers of paint revealing the building’s rich history. Curved lines echo the oven’s shape, traced across the floor and accentuated by track lighting on the ceiling, creating a seamless flow throughout the space.
Seating is arranged like a nave, with wooden benches and tables flanking a central pathway, inviting a communal dining experience. The concept further embraces the symbology of the Virgin Mary and Marian architecture, drawing from historical references to enhance the aesthetic and spiritual connection of the space.
In the transcept of the “L”-shaped layout, additional seating features a mirrored wall that amplifies the area, creating an illusion of spaciousness. The kitchen area showcases ceramic tiles and terracotta accents, merging practical industrial elements with warm, elegant materials.
Myrto Pizzeria in Porto Cervo, designed by the Milan-based Studio Wok, is a stunning tribute to the essence of the Costa Smeralda. Inspired by Sardinia’s wind-carved granite rocks, the design embodies the region’s natural beauty and rich storytelling through architecture.
The interior captures the feel of a cave, with sinuous, sandy pink plaster walls and arched window openings that evoke the island’s unique landscape. This “homely and intimate” space is thoughtfully adorned with custom furnishings, including a striking green-tiled counter that mirrors the local Mediterranean flora. The curved ceilings enhance the cave-like atmosphere, creating an inviting environment for diners.
In these organic, flowing spaces, the palette is enriched with pastel-colored furnishings that contrast beautifully with burgundy lighting designed by Michael Anastassiades for Flos. This interplay of colors and textures fosters a warm ambiance, inviting guests to relax and enjoy their meals.
The outdoor patio extends the interior, transformed into an airy extension of the restaurant. Here, lightweight fabric strips form a dynamic roof that responds to the elements, allowing glimpses of the sky while maintaining a connection to nature.
Overall, Myrto serves as a site-specific homage to Sardinia’s beauty, where architecture narrates the story of the land and its culture, making each visit a unique and memorable experience.
